Engineered Substrate for Rare Aroids

Standard potting soil works excellently for tomatoes. For rare aroids, it buries them alive. Peat + compost + minimal perlite = a substrate that retains moisture exactly where it should not — in a dense mass directly surrounding the roots, without ventilation. Aroid roots are epiphytic by nature: in the jungle they grow on trees, in leaf litter, with airflow around them 24/7. When you place them in a pot with heavy potting soil, you are creating an environment with no relation to their evolutionary history. Our formula for mature plants and Starter Plants: 40% Orchiata Bark, 30% Perlite, 30% Coconut Coir. That is it. Three components. Orchiata Bark is processed pine bark — provides physical structure, root anchoring, and grip. Perlite is expanded volcanic rock — immediate drainage, zero compaction. Coconut Coir is coconut fiber — balanced moisture retention, neutral pH of 5.8–6.5. Together they create a substrate that drains fast, aerates well, and holds no excess water. Optional additions worth including: 5–10% Activated Carbon — absorbs toxins and prevents odor and mold. 5% Zeolite — improves trace mineral availability and balances pH. Advantages: uniform particle size of 2–3mm that provides perfect aeration for delicate roots. Slightly acidic pH (6.0–6.5) — precise for the needs of most aroids. Does not compact over time.
