Fertilizing Rare Aroids: Feed the Roots, Not the Fear
Most rare plants die overfed, not underfed. Fertilizer is a dose, not a wish.
English
A plant in bark, perlite and coir has no pantry. Potting soil carries months of nutrients; an engineered substrate carries none. Everything the plant eats comes from you. That sounds like a burden. It is actually control.
Rare aroids are slow feeders. They do not want a monthly banquet; they want a little, every time, all season. The rule is weakly, weekly: a quarter-strength dose of a complete liquid fertilizer at every watering during active growth, which in Israel runs roughly April to October. In winter, when new leaves slow or stop, halve it or pause it. Alocasia that go dormant get nothing until the next leaf appears.
What to buy: a complete liquid fertilizer with micronutrients, roughly a 3-1-2 ratio (9-3-6 or a diluted 20-10-20 both work), with chelated iron. Calcium and magnesium matter more than people think. If you water with Israeli tap water you already get plenty of both; it is hard water. If you water with RO or distilled, you must add Cal-Mag or the new leaves will come in deformed.
Dose by EC, not by the label. The label was written for tomatoes. Measure the finished solution with an EC pen: 0.6 to 0.9 mS/cm for mature plants (that number includes your water's own baseline), 0.3 to 0.5 for TC starts and freshly hardened plants, never above 1.2. A sixty-shekel EC pen ends every argument about "how much".
Flush. Every four to six weeks run clean water through the pot until it drains freely for a minute. Fertilizer salts accumulate in bark and coir. You see them as white crust on the substrate surface and brown, crispy leaf margins. Flushing resets the pot.
Slow-release pellets (14-14-14 type, 3 to 4 month) at half the label rate, top-dressed, are fine for mature plants. Never for TC starts, never mixed into the substrate of a plant you are still acclimating.
Do not foliar feed. Wet variegated leaves plus fertilizer means burns and fungal spots on the white tissue.
Variegated plants have less chlorophyll, so they make less energy and need less nitrogen, not more. Fertilizer will not create variegation, and pushing growth hard with nitrogen tends to favor the green tissue.
Reading the plant: brown crispy edges, white crust and roots that stop growing mean too much. Uniformly pale new leaves, leaves getting smaller and older leaves yellowing from the bottom up mean too little. Before you change the dose, rule out light and roots. Most "nutrient problems" are root problems wearing a costume.
