Israeli Climate

Can You Grow Aroids Outdoors in Israel?

Some of them, part of the year. It is the sharav that decides, not the winter.

English
The instinct is right. These are tropical plants and an Israeli summer is warm, so a balcony ought to suit them better than a living room. Sometimes it does. The plants that spend May to October outside in the right spot grow faster and thicker than anything indoors, because outdoor shade still carries more light than a bright window. The thing that kills them is not the heat and it is not the winter. It is the sharav, the hot dry wind off the desert. Temperature alone an aroid can handle; 35°C in humid coastal air is a growing day. The same 35°C at 15 percent humidity with wind is a leaf that loses water faster than roots can replace it, and you come home to a plant that crisped in a single afternoon. A sharav day is the one day a balcony plant has to come inside, and the forecast gives you a day of warning. Aspect decides whether the rest of the season works. A north-facing balcony is the good one: bright, never direct, usable all summer. East works until about eleven in the morning and then needs shade. West is the trap, because afternoon sun in July on a concrete balcony is both radiant heat and reflected heat, and concrete keeps radiating after sunset. South needs 50 percent shade cloth to be usable at all. If the balcony is enclosed in glass, treat it as a greenhouse, not as outdoors: it will run ten degrees hotter than the air outside and cook everything in it by noon. Winter is the easy half in most of the country. Coastal and central Israel rarely go below 8 to 10°C, which stops growth without doing damage. Alocasia will go dormant, drop leaves and look dead, and that is normal, not a loss; keep it dry and it returns in spring. Jerusalem, the Galilee and the Golan do get cold enough to injure tissue, and there anything tropical comes in before the first cold night. The real winter risk everywhere is not cold, it is cold plus wet substrate, which is how roots rot. What we would and would not put outside. Monstera deliciosa, mature Philodendron, Epipremnum and Rhaphidophora handle a shaded balcony well. Alocasia can, in full shade, with the sharav rule enforced. What stays in: anything highly variegated, because white tissue has no chlorophyll, no protection, and burns at light levels that green tissue enjoys; anything freshly acclimated from tissue culture; and anything under six months in your care. Moving a plant out is a hardening problem, the same as any other. A plant that has lived indoors goes into full shade first, for a week, then to its final spot. Straight from a living room onto a balcony is how a Monstera gets sunburn in two days, and burned tissue never recovers, it only gets grown past.
