How Much Light It Actually Needs, in an Israeli Apartment
"Bright indirect light" is not an instruction. It is a specific window, at a specific distance, facing a specific way.
English
Care labels say bright indirect light as if it means something. It does not, on its own. The same phrase describes a spot that cooks a Monstera Albo in Tel Aviv in July and a spot where an Alocasia slowly starves in a Jerusalem flat in January.
Israel complicates it in a specific way: the light here is strong. Not tropical-jungle strong, desert strong. A south-facing window in Israel in summer delivers more direct radiation than most care guides, written in northern Europe, ever contemplate. Advice that says put it in a sunny window is, here, advice to burn the plant.
Start with orientation. A north window gives soft, steady light all day and is the safest place for a variegated plant, but in winter it can drop below what the plant needs to hold its variegation. East gives gentle direct sun for two or three hours in the morning and is the best all-round position for aroids. West gives harsh afternoon sun in a hot room, which is the worst combination. South is the strongest, usable only with a sheer curtain or at a distance.
Then distance, which matters more than orientation and is where most people go wrong. Light falls off fast. A plant one metre back from a window receives roughly a quarter of what it gets sitting on the sill. Most rooms that feel bright to a person are dim to a plant, because human eyes adapt and light meters do not.
You can measure it without buying anything. Any phone camera app with manual settings, or a free lux meter app, is accurate enough to compare spots. What you want in lux, at the leaf: 10,000 to 20,000 for a variegated Monstera or Alocasia, 5,000 to 10,000 for green Philodendron and low-light aroids, above 25,000 and you are into burn territory for white tissue. If you have no meter, use the shadow test: hold your hand a foot above the leaf. A sharp, dark shadow means direct sun and too much for variegation. A soft shadow with defined edges is right. No visible shadow at all means the plant is in the dark.
Reading the plant is the final check. Too much light bleaches the white sections to paper and scorches them brown from the edge in, and green leaves go pale and yellowish overall. Too little light gives long stretched stems, small new leaves, a plant leaning hard toward the window, and, the expensive one, new leaves coming in green when the old ones were variegated. Variegation is energy the plant can only afford in good light.
Grow lights are not an admission of defeat here, they are how anyone grows serious variegates through an Israeli winter without putting them in a window that will roast them in June. A basic full-spectrum LED at 30 to 40 cm above the plant, on a timer for 10 to 12 hours, removes the seasonal swing entirely.
