Investment & Genetic Stability: How to Buy Correctly

A high price doesn't guarantee a good plant. A correct inspection does.

English
The problem with the rare plant market is that everyone is selling. Not everyone is a grower. And the difference between the two costs you a great deal of money. Variegation is a mutation, and in the case of most rare plants you buy, it is a Chimeric Mutation. This means: it exists at the cellular level, not at the level of the genomic DNA. The plant can lose it at any stage, a process called Reversion. It will return to full green. Your money, will not return. Causes of reversion: insufficient light (the plant 'decides' it needs more chlorophyll), wrong temperature, physical injury, a cut too close to the meristem, and sometimes simply bad luck, because the mutation was marginal from the start. Therefore, the pre-purchase inspection is not a bonus, it is mandatory. Inspection 1, The Meristem: the active growth point, the youngest heart of the plant. Inspect it directly. Is there color in it? Pink, white, cream, excellent. Completely green? Red flag. A green meristem = the plant is already 'calculating' a return to green. Inspection 2, Auxiliary Buds: the small buds at the junction between stem and leaf. Touch them, look at them closely. Color in the bud = variegation exists at a deeper genetic level. Completely green bud = uncertainty. Inspection 3, Green:White ratio: 50:50 is the proven ideal. More than 70% white, the plant is too weak to support itself; sectors will die off. Less than 20% white, the plant is on its way to reversion. Do not buy: a plant whose seller refuses to photograph the meristem. A plant with 100% white leaves. TC where variegation is not visible in the flask. A price that doubled in one week, a signal of market manipulation, not genuine demand.
