How to Tell a Rare Plant Is Actually Rare

Most of what sells as rare is not. Some of it is not even the plant on the label.

English
Rare has become a price tag rather than a fact. Plenty of what is sold as rare in Israel is a common plant with an uncommon name, a stressed plant whose markings will vanish, or a cutting that will never look like the photo. None of that requires a dishonest seller. Most of it is sellers repeating what they were told. The first question is what kind of variegation you are buying, because they behave completely differently. Chimeric variegation, which is what Monstera Albo, Philodendron Pink Princess and the variegated Alocasia have, is two genetically different tissues growing side by side from the same growing point. It is stable in the sense that it persists, and unstable in the sense that any single cutting can lose it. This is the kind worth money. Sectoral variegation follows the same rule: look for hard-edged blocks and sectors that follow the leaf's structure. What is not worth money: pattern variegation, which is genetic and comes true from seed, so it is not rare in any commercial sense no matter what it costs. And viral variegation, which is a plant disease, usually mosaic virus, sold as a feature. It looks like a fine mottled speckle spread evenly across the leaf rather than in blocks, and it will infect the rest of your collection. If the markings look like a spray of dots rather than a map of continents, walk away. The question that separates a good seller from a bad one is simple and you should ask it: where did this plant come from, tissue culture or a cutting? A TC plant was grown from a meristem in a lab, so its variegation is documented and reproducible, and it arrives clean of pests and virus. A cutting carries whatever its mother had, good and bad. Neither answer is wrong. An evasive answer is. Then check the plant itself rather than the photo. Look at the newest leaf, not the biggest one, because the newest leaf is what the plant is doing now: if the old leaves are dramatic and the new one is mostly green, that plant is reverting and you are buying the past. Check the growing point is intact and undamaged, since a chimera lives there and a damaged one may never produce variegation again. Look for a fully white leaf, which is beautiful and a problem, because it feeds on nothing and drains the plant. And the ratio people get wrong: a plant that is 80 percent white is not the best one, it is the one most likely to die. On price, the only useful anchor is what the same clone sells for elsewhere. A genuine variegated Monstera Albo in Israel has a floor set by import cost and years of slow growth. If something is dramatically cheaper than every other listing, the likely explanations are that it is not the plant named, the variegation is viral, or it is an unrooted cutting photographed next to a mature plant. Ask for a photo of the actual plant, taken today, with the whole pot in frame. A seller who cannot produce that is selling you a stock image.
