Alocasia Heart Balloon represents the most architectural side of the Alocasia genus — an inflated, convex, exaggerated heart-shaped leaf that looks like it is about to take flight. The unique form is created by rapid differential growth of upper versus lower epidermal cells. It is beautiful precisely because it is entirely unnatural — and unsuitable growing conditions will flatten the plant within months. The central problem: a condition growers call 'deflated balloon' — leaves flatten and lose their curvature. The cause in 90% of cases: drought stress. If ambient humidity drops below 75%, the differential cell growth rate equalizes and the balloon structure disappears. Not entirely reversible. Light: 70% indirect. Less light-sensitive than Polly Pink, but does not respond well to direct sun. Maximum half an hour of gentle morning sun. Humidity: 85% relative. The critical number. The plant's architectural form depends on humidity. Evaporation tray, steam humidifier, or humidity dome. Substrate: extreme drainage. Pumice (60%) + activated carbon (20%) + zeolite (20%). Alocasia Heart Balloon is highly sensitive to root rot — the most common cause of death in Israel. Watering: finger to 2cm depth — if moist, don't water. If dry — water to full saturation and allow to drain completely. Winter: enters partial dormancy, may drop leaves and remain as bulb only. Normal. Maintain high humidity and relatively dry substrate.
